Creating a Safe, Comfortable Workplace

Initiatives for a Comfortable Work Environment

At Mizuho, we promote a comfortable and safe worksite where employees' rights are respected. To establish a relationship of mutual trust between the company and its employees, Mizuho promotes sufficient communication between management and employees, conducts employee awareness surveys and addresses other measures to create a worksite where employees can work with a positive mood and high morale.

Initiatives for Workplace Safety and Health

As part of our initiatives to comply with laws and ordinances concerning occupational safety and health, we strive to improve the safety and health of employees through various health examinations, providing health management under the direction of industrial physicians and other specialists, and establishing the Health Committee. We have established "Health Development Centers" staffed with full–time industrial physicians at our Marunouchi 2–chome Building, MHBK's head office building, and the Fuji Building in Osaka, and conduct annual physical examinations in which industrial physicians provide health advice to all employees. In addition, the health insurance union issues a "health newsletter" to all employees, and representatives of management and workers discuss ways to improve worker's health in meetings of the Health Committee.

Initiatives to Ensure and Improve Employees' Mental Health

Mizuho recognizes mental health is an important pillar of employee health care management, and various measures have been adopted to deal with it. One of the self-care functions offered by Mizuho takes the form of a tool that allows employees to check their own stress levels at any time using the Mizuho intranet. To assist with line care, managers are given training to raise their awareness levels, while industrial physicians and other occupational health care staff provide local guidance and other support on an ongoing basis. We have also set up a consultation system that employees can access easily, establishing desks where employees can talk to expert counselors about their concerns and anxieties.

Maintaining a Sound Relationship between the Company and Its Employees

Mizuho builds relationships of mutual respect with employees, works to maintain and improve working conditions to boost their economic standing, and contributes to the national economy through healthy corporate development.

In accordance with labor legislation, group companies engage in required labor negotiations with parties such as unions or employee representatives who represent a majority of employees at each business location. We have established a Management Conference, a Central Labor Conference and a Workplace Conference to deal with the different issues as appropriate.

Management Council

This is a meeting to exchange opinions on management policy and business results and solve problems in the case of disputes or the discovery of risks.

Central Council

This is a meeting to discuss employees' work conditions such as work hours and benefits.

Workplace Council

This is a meeting to discuss work conditions, welfare, disciplinary rules, enhancement of efficiency and complaints at each worksite, etc.

Initiatives to Raise Human Rights Awareness

To establish a corporate culture that fully respects human rights, each Group company engages in efforts to raise the awareness of human rights. We have established basic policies on respect for human rights and have signed the United Nation's Global Compact to demonstrate our agreement with its calls for voluntary compliance with its principles on matters including human rights, labor, and anti–corruption.

We have appointed employees to be responsible for promoting human rights awareness within divisions, offices, and branches, and all employees must take the "Human Rights Awareness Worksite Training" each year. Related training is also conducted annually for officers, division/office/branch managers and the personnel in charge of the promotion of human rights awareness.

In addition to the provision of training, Mizuho takes other measures to enhance and raise the awareness of human rights. Such measures include collecting human rights–related catchphrases from employees of the Group companies and their families and the use of leaflets and the intranet to disseminate information.

In the rare case of sexual or other types of harassment, an in–house consultation system is in place. With this system, each Group company has multiple places where victims can seek assistance.

Mizuho's Basic Policy

With the following basic policy, Mizuho engages in activities to raise awareness of the respect for human rights. We work to ensure all employees understand these basic policies through means including the training mentioned above.

  • The group respects the dignity and human rights of customers, officers, employees and all persons. It also establishes a corporate culture in which human rights are fully respected.
  • Respect for each other and behaving with compassion make Mizuho a better place to work by creating a positive and encouraging mood, which also leads to the Group gaining trust from customers.
  • Mizuho has established a Human Rights Awareness and Promotion Committee to raise each employee's awareness of human rights.
